it may inprove flow it may not, but it will also increase intake air temperature as u r using air from top of engine as opposed to front of engine, warm air is less dense so u may actually loose power.
U would be beter off just replacing air ducting with larger bore tubing.

I thought it was worth a try to increase mpg. I can’t tell that it helped. It didn’t hurt anything.

someone reckons upto 35mpg for the 7.3idi, I thought that sounded a bit high.
cool air is the most important thing, sometimes u can take off filter, get beter flow but the air is warm so bhp can be lost.

Hi Artfd, are you doing this to increase gas mileage? thanks, mj

Been running my truck for trips around the county for a year since doing this. I noticed no change whatsoever in engine noise. Fuel mileage is 20-25 mpg with nothing in the bed of the truck. I think this is excellent for a 5000-lb 25 year old vehicle.

Sadly you wont gain any power from this mod, its been dynoed, just suction noise. HOWEVER certain year 6.9l came with no soup bowl but did have a reducer plate on the intake (in the center of where the filter sits). drill 6 spot welds and you WILL have a noticable difference. Nice Vid

Thanks for your support! I didn’t want my video being used to describe the “Idiot of the Week”

Would you lend it to me?

Sad to say, the price of diesel went up almost 75 cents a gallon between the time I did this & now. The truck has been fueled up & loaded all summer & fall. I haven’t driven it enough to even tell if it made any difference. Reports posted on the web give varying results on power & fuel economy. My intuition is that removing the soup bowl makes air flow into the engine less restricted, which is usually a good idea for diesels.

Feel free to drill your own spot welds. I thought this way the most straight forward. Abrasive metal cutting wheels are much cheaper than drill bits & cut through sheet metal like butter. Besides all the noise & flying sparks are more fun than drilling.
This air cleaner top was from a 1983 F250, which was the first year the 6.9L diesel was available. It was far easier to cut off the soup bowl on the unit I have than to bother looking for one on the used market.

Works better to just dril the like 6 spot welds, or just go and get an early 6.9 top that didnt have one, as the only yar those came on with a 6.9 is 87.

what kind of power gain did you get from this????
